Boy, 8, Killed By Car While Waiting At A Bus Stop

Driver May Have Been Reaching For His Cell Phone

Mother, 2 Sisters Accompanying Victim Were Hospitalized

(CBS) WESTMINSTER An SUV whose driver may have been reaching for a cell phone jumped a curb in Westminster Wednesday and plowed into four family members waiting at a bus stop, leaving a young boy dead and severely injuring his mother and two girls, police said.

The woman and children were waiting at an Orange County Transportation Authority bus stop at Edwards Street and Garden Grove Boulevard about 2:15 p.m. when the driver of the SUV lost control of the white Nissan, Westminster police officer Van Woodson said.

The boy, believed to be 8 or 9 years old, died at the scene. Two girls, about 11 and 13 years old, and the woman were hospitalized with severe injuries, according to Woodson.

The driver, a man in his 40s, was taken to the Westminster Police Department for questioning, and investigators were also questioning witnesses, Woodson said.

"His initial statement was he was reaching for his cell phone and lost control of the car," the officer said. "You really need to pay attention to what you're doing while you're driving."

Investigators do not believe alcohol was involved, he said.
