Aussies,
If you liked The Long Way Round then there's a good chance you'll like (Ewan McGregor's riding partner) Charlie Boorman's doco on the Race to Dakar to be shown on ABC, 8:30 this Thursday (tomorrow) night.

Funny timing for this post! Just one minute ago I got an email from the video company I purchased the "Long Way Round" DVDs from informing me that I can now order "Race to Dakar" from them. I had not even heard of the series yet.
Gotta set up my DVR for that one, thanks for the heads up!

Checked all of the listings on two TV Internet sites and finally did a Google search. Apparently it's playing in the UK . . .
Also DVD's are available from Amazon UK, but may not be the same format as in the states.
"Catch Race to Dakar every Tuesday on Sky Two from October 17th at 10pm or every Saturday from October 21st at 11pm
In 2006, Charley Boorman competed in the Dakar Rally, arguably the toughest motorcycle race in the world. The race originated in 1978, a year after racer Thierry Sabine got lost in the desert and decided it would be a good location for a regular rally. Originally, the rally was from Paris, France to Dakar, Senegal, interrupted by a transfer across the Mediterranean. However, due to politics and other factors, the course - including its origin and destination - has been varied over the years. The 2006 Dakar Rally started in Lisbon, Portugal.
The Dakar Rally is run by the organisers of the Tour de France. This unique series looks into all aspects of competing in the Dakar including the groundwork for the race through to the bike preparation, physical training and logistics.
The programme tells a story that has never been told before, one that stresses how difficult this adventure is on a personal level and not specifically on which position Charley finishes in. This 'lifestyle' approach to the documentary and the fact Charley is a newcomer just as determined as the other competitors, gives an alternative take on the Dakar, from the privateer angle, as opposed to the majority of sports coverage which focuses on race results. Yeah, I looked hard, finally went to the website, it is only in the UK and Australia at this time. Maybe I will just get the DVDs, only $19. They are available in the US format now.
