View Full Version : Power tap for ComSystem

I'm in the middle of a lot of electrical work on my '03 LTC, and when I isolated my front seat heater wire to power my farkle relay, I was surprised to find that it had already been tapped - and the bad part is that it was tapped with one of those unreliable hinged guillotine taps  . Then, to add to the surprise, the cable running out of this tap has a BMW tag with a part number on it (sorry, forgot to write the part number down) and it runs to a relay, which is connected direct to the battery and to the ComSystem harness. So I'm assuming this is providing power to the ComSystem.
I'm the second owner on this bike, so my question is - did the PO move the relay wire, or did the factory actually use this cheap tap connector?
I have since replaced it with a crimped butt connector covered in shrink tube.

I have since replaced it with a crimped butt connector covered in shrink tube.My memory (just verified by a glance at the old installation instruction sheets) is that the add-on accessory power harness kit that was needed to provide power to the ComSystem installation kit did *not* use a Scotch-lok (I hate 'em too -- *so* many reasons to not use 'em). The BMW kit required you to remove one of the pins from the heated seat connector (using the BMW connector removal tool), replace it with a lead from the power harness' relay, and then place the bare pin from the heated seat connector into a new plastic barrel connector (which was then connected to a corresponding terminal). Maybe the PO lost/cut off the connector and used a Scotch-loc?? Anyway, good move to eliminate it!
