Another gentleman on this list asked what my "award-winning" 1983 R80S looked like, so here it is. It won best of class and people's choice awards in the vintage bike show at the 2006 Ga. Mtn. Rally. That's really not a big deal, as there weren't that many bikes entered. I figured on a good chance to get best in class, but people's choice (best in show) was a nice surprise.
The bike began its life as a 1983 R80RT. It was wrecked, the RT fairing thrown away, and the owner before me turned it into what you see here. In addition to the cosmetics, he totally disassembled the engine, did a top end job (including new piston rings), and put it back together. He used BMW valves and was unhappy with them ... so he disassembled again, and this time used Black Diamond valves before reassembly. Then his doctor told him not to ride any more - so now it's mine. It runs like a top - the engine starts almost before you can get your finger off the start switch. Has Reynolds ride-off stand, front fork brace, Progressive front springs, Koni rear shocks, 37/11 rear end (GREAT for mountain riding), Mac double-walled header pipes, Givi saddle bags, R90S bikini fairing, R100S seat.
The bike was at Touring Sport BMW for sale. I rode it, liked it, and when I showed it to Sharon, she said "Let's buy it". I picked a good one (bike AND wife).
