I'm comming off HD , then ST1300; Well; I went for the K/GT today after much demo rides of others; including FJR 1300, K1200r, R1200RT,and R1200GS. The K/Gt was a winner for me. After sale; I mentioned I wrench my own bikes for years on a few models, and the dealer told me NOT ON THIS ONE! So I said well; maybey after warrentee; he said oil change, brake pad replacement, and valve check MUST be done by a BMW tech. Oil needs to be pumped to be replaced, pad replacement needs calibration (servo type), and valve check is complex, and MUST be done by BMW shop or equal. I dont see why I cant buy bump to change oil,change pads, and valve lash clearance checks if I learn procedure. I'm sure there's some things need be checked by computer if major malfunction occurs; but I'm not loosing a days pay, and travel to nearest dealer to have oil changed ! I'm installing the J+M CB music amp w/ antenna. Any wrenches here do there own work, and where tcan I get shop manual,tech tips, and an aftermarket seller of oil and air filters, ect. ?

PLEASE help;
Howie...

Congrats! It's the best bike I've owned to date. 12K miles of smiles! :)

As for your dealer...he's a liar! The oil doesn't need to be pumped...what a crock! Nor do the pads need "calibrated". The valve adjustment will be a little tricky, but not impossible. The coolant does need to be pumped out though. I'll leave that up to my dealer.

Howard: I'm in the same boat as you are. After 9 HD's and a couple sundry others that don't really count (except that Bultaco 450 I terrorized the Tahoe Valley with so many years ago... IT counts!)... I picked up my new '07 GT going on 3 weeks ago. I got pretty much the same line from the stealership I bought it from... but a different story from a real nice guy who owns the Talahassee BMW dealership. There's a lot to learn (for me, anyway)... and there's no smokey curtain at that shop... says he doesn't mind me watching his tech do it, long as I don't pester him. "Fine" sez I... so, the snooty place doesn't get my service bidness, 'cept for that first 600 mi. check up.

yea; Took the Gt out again today; and this bike gets even better each time I ride it! Much better replacement from the HondA ST1300 I bought back in March. This new GT is the best bike iv'e owned in 30 yrs. So Far So Good.
