View Full Version : Slave Cylinder Tech Session In North Carolina
cccpastorjack
Oct 28th, 2006, 9:28 pm
OK Guys...here's the deal. I live in Cornelius, NC (just north of Charlotte, NC) and myself and one other guy just replaced both of our Slave Cylinders and drilled weepholes in both bikes. Both went extremely smooth and each one took about 3-4 hours to perform. The second bike was much quicker! ;)
I would love to host a Tech Session to do this procedure at my garage. I have all the necessaries (tool wise), and will volunteer the labor, snacks and a great time! Is there anyone in this area who needs the service done on their bike and would like the free service? You would need to purchase your own parts ahead of time, but we can "sho 'nuff" perform the task!
We could possibly do two in one day, but we'd have to start early. We could perform other services too as long as you bring your own parts! I have a lift and complete shop in my two car garage, so we'll sign up the first serious inquirers! Reply to this thread and I'll monitor it and set a date that works for all real soon. First come, first serve!

If you folks could take some pictures (with lots of light!) from the beginning to the end with a narrative it would be a great help - and certainly appreciated by others. Worthy of posting in the Hall of Wisdom. Wish I was closer to y'all 'cause this is on my short list... :bmw:

Jack, what parts, fluids, etc. are needed? Sound like this might be a good preventative measure.

Jack,
I know there are several people interested in the slave cylinder thing, especially with experience on hand. They probably just haven't chimed in yet. Personally, I'm waiting until I need to dig in that deep for other reasons or the warranty is up.
I'm going to be doing the 24K and annual very soon. I can handle the work but I'll be doing it incrementally due to time constraints. I would really enjoy meeting more of the locals and could probably accomplish some of the work at a tech session at your place. So, sign me up as a tentative attendee, based on date of course.

Jack, what parts, fluids, etc. are needed? Sound like this might be a good preventative measure.
This is a preventative maintenance issue and it is generally suggested that the Slave Cylinder be replaced around 40-50k miles. We would also be drilling a "weephole" that will allow the fluid to drain outside of the engine (just in case the slave cylinder ever leaked), instead of draining into the clutch area and ruining the clutch.
The parts cost about $100 - $120 which is a huge savings over the repair if the Slave Cylinder ever fails (approx $1,200 - $1,400). :D
You will need the following parts:
Qty. 1 - Clutch Slave Cylinder for your year bike
Qty. 4 - Aluminum Sealing washers where lines
attach to the new cylinder
Qty. 1 - Gasket for the Slave Cylinder
Qty. 1 - Qt. of Dot 4 Brake Fluid (approx.)
I have all the tools needed...specialty and otherwise. ;) If you want to sign up to do this on your bike, please let me know ASAP. I''ll then set a date that would work for both of us!

I don't need any current work done on my LT. But if the schedule works out I would like to drive up from Atlanta to observe/help. Nothing like hands on experience and I might have to replace a clutch some day.
May we never find the end of the road!

I'm interested in having my '99 done. It is at 32000+ miles and sounds like a good preventative measure. Let me check on parts availability. I am not available for Nov 11th due to Veteran's Day commitment. I live in Columbia, SC so the commute should be fairly short. Thanks for the offer. Terry Carr

Jack-
I live very near in Cornelius and have just turned 50,000 on my 99KLT on the way back from Biketoberfest.
When my first rear drive went out at 16,000, they also replaced the clutch because they said they found a leaking seal. I'm not sure if the slave cylinder got done then or not, but with all the talk about ruining the clutch, I'd like to do the slave cylinder replacement and the weep hole procedure as a precaution.
I'll need to get the parts from Chicago BMW if that's still the best place.
I've read that Nov 11 might be a date for doing this? Basically I can do it whenever it suits after I get the parts that are needed.

It took me three weeks to get the parts from Chicago BMW when I ordered them in August. I wasn't really pleased with the service and I think I would rather pay the local dealer for better service.

I hate to be the bearer of possible bad news, but I don't know that purchasing from you local dealer would be any better. The last two slaves that I had replaced at the dealer, they had to order the parts before they started the work. I was with out my LT for 8 days both times.

I figured that they would have to order the parts but 8 days is a lot better than 3 weeks.

Javier at Chicago BMW just told me that all of the parts are in the country...don't have to come from Germany....and they can ship within 5 days. If you've bought stuff from them before, they'll use the faster ordering system to get the parts into Chicago within a day or 2 and then ship them right out to you. And you still get the full 20% off.
He said the total parts including the gasket, 4 seals, cylinder, and felt strip ($3.40 if your bike has one) totalled $88.68 + the usual $7-8 shipping.

I need a count on how many want to do the Slave Cylinder Replacement/Weephole procedure assuming parts get in on time. Once I have the first 3-4 spots reserved I will contact everyone interested and select a date that works. I'm easily located off a main hwy (I-77) in Cornelius NC and Mike Sheldon (a great guy and wonderful mechanic) is ready to helpout. Both of us have done the procedure twice, SOOO we should be able to do 3 or 4 if we make a day out of it!
First 3 or 4 to sign up...FIRST COME....FIRST SERVE!!!!

Hi Jack, I am very interested in getting this done...and you guys seem to have the experience it takes to make it happen.
If I'm not too far North, please add my name to your short list. Heh, its only 680 miles, and I can visit with my sister who just moved to Wallace, NC!
I'll order all needed parts in the morning. :bmw:

We have two people signed up for the Slave Cylinder Replacement/Weephole procedure. They are:
1. WES PHILLIPS - '99 LT Riding in from Lake Norman, NC
2. J. AVERILL TOWNSEND '02 LT Riding in from Bloomfield Hills, MI (WOW!)
3. ________________________________________________________
If WES and AVERILL will confirm by a PM to me I will work immediatly with you to establish a date that will work for all (cold weather is coming soon). If you have not done so, PLEASE order your parts YESTERDAY and let me know of an expected arrival date on your PM.
We still have room for one more! Mike Sheldon is an excellent mechanic and my shop has room to do two bikes at one time. He will Lead/Assist on one bike and I on the other. I think we could do three bikes for sure...SO...who'll it be?????

My local dealer, Touring Sport BMW, had all the parts in stock. Total price with sales tax was about $90. From what others have said, that seems like a fair price, with no waiting for shipping. I didn't ask if they had any more slave cylinders in stock today.

Ronlray, would be glad to have you come up, if you dont mind doing a bit of the preliminary work, while we are getting the other bikes apart, ie. taking off the tire, and rear foot plates etc, and we can help you with what needs to come off, then just drilling a weep hole should not be a big deal as we dont need to bleed the clutch, which takes a bit of time. Then once the hole is drilled and we get the swing arm on you can zip it back together again in about 30 min.

Averill,
I'll try to put in an order for a couple of warm days, but we have been expecially blessed lately! It was about 78 degrees today and the grass is GREEN! We have a storm front moving through in the next couple of days, but we'll wait and see. God bless!

Hey guys,
I need YOUR input...that is, those who are planning to attend. I know it is still about 6 days out and things could change, but the weather is predicted to be a very cold, hard rain. Help me make the call. Should we set a "rain date" during Jan/Feb????? Just in case??? PLEASE let me know ASAP and we'll go with the majority.

As long as it isn't ice I'll be there. Only 75 miles for me though. Also, I'm not seeing a lot of rain. Lows high 20's, high's mid 50's. After stepping off the plane from MN Friday night, I think it will feel quite balmy:)
What about Averill? What is his situation? Is he actually riding down. If so, he's committed on Friday isn't he?
A rain date could be set later, I think we should consider a drop dead go/no go time and date, so everyone has time to react.

My "05" failed at 28k. The dealer replaced everything under warranty. I asked him to drill the weep hole and he wouldn't do it or allow me to do it in his shop. I asked if the new parts would resolve the issue and was told the replacement parts were the same as stock. Has anyone had second failure? My gut tells me I should do the procedure to insure no other clutch failures. Thoughts?

Yes...without a doubt I would drill the weephole. ESPECIALLY since you have all new parts installed. You want to protect them. Now...my only hesitation would be if the drilling would void your warranty. Not sure if it will. And BTW...we just installed a replacement cylinder on Mike Sheldan's bike and quess what...it failed. So, yes, a replacement is the SAME as stock. They tend to fail.

Jack,
I've been watching/reading the thread. It looks like the weather will hold so if nothing major come up I plan on heading out from the DC area on Friday and ride that way. Will spend the night in your area and be at your place on Saturday morning at 8 AM. I plan on departing around 2 PM on Saturday and stopping to visit friends in Durham area and then on back to DC on Sunday. I don't need any work done just want to meet up with other LT riders and see what they have done to their bikes. (laffs really just want to ride before the serious weather sets in!)

Hi Guys,
I will be attending along with a friend on Saturday. We waited till now to respond to this thread in an effort to get a better feel for what the weather was going to do. We are both just south of Greensboro NC so we only have about 90 miles or so. I am not sure at this point wether or not we will be on our LTs or in a cage with enviromental controls.
We both already have weep holes drilled in our bikes so we just want to see some more LT guys.

I'm planning to leave before 6:00 a.m. on Saturday to make the trip up from Greenville. Memo to me: Set Heat-Troller to "nuclear".
I ordered a Centech AP-1 with relay from Eastern Beaver in hopes that I could have it installed before the trip (to permanently wire in my heated seat). As of yesterday it had not shown up so I guess I'm back to my cobbled-up BMW plug connection. Somebody please remind me to shut all that heated gear off when I get to the tech session, or I'm gonna need a jump.

Averill,
I am amazed at your courage! Just be careful coming through the mountains. We are getting a little snow there this evening (not here), but the roads SHOULD be clear. Just everyone...PLEASE BE CAREFUL...it will be cold and clear. Cold enough to freeze and create BLACK ICE. Let's all arrive here and back home safely - - 100% intact.
Averill, we will jump on your bike 1st since you have to leave early! I'm prayin' for 'ya!!! ;)

Hey Guys...
Just so you know, I'll have plenty of hot coffee and snacks. There'll also be free pizza for lunch and guess what???? I bought the ISLE OF MANN TT video game for my Sony Playstation. We'll hook it up to the LARGE SCREEN and you can "ride" the Isle of Mann at 175 mph....Whew...it's a blast and fairly realistic!!!! Really cool game. Of course, that'll be something for some to do while others are working!

Just got back to Atlanta and thought I would post a few pictures of the Tech Session that Jack Homesley hosted today. Despite the cold morning weather, 16 degrees when I left Atlanta at 4:00 AM this morning, there was quite a few riders coming and going. I would provide the names but I wasn't taking notes and would not want to wrongly misspell or miss someone.
Thanks Jack for your hospitality and creating an opportunity to meet a few of the Carolina LT riders. Here are some of the pictures.
May we never find the end of the road!

...WHAT A BLAST! :D
I'll give a more detailed report tomorrow, but I could not go to bed without saying "THANK YOU" to everyone who attended and DShealy who helped with technical advice.
I am new to the BMW Community, but I must admit that everyone at the session was a real blessing to me. Very gracious, eager to help, friendly! In typical behavior, one rider, Weyman Carter, said to another, "You take my slot to get your cylinder changed and weephole drilled." He just gave it up! And guess what, Terry's cylinder was leaking when we opened her up. Just in time! ;) Weyman, your generosity saved him a bundle! We''l get your's soon!
Everyone helped in some way. Everyone had a great attitude and we got a LOT of work done for the time we had together. I am absolutely SURE we saved two riders from sure catastrophic failures down the road.
We finished:
3 Slave cylinder/weephole procedures
1 Transmission output shaft seal replacement (leaking profusely)
Several Clutch fluid changes
1 Integrated Brake Fluid change
Checked out Wes' Steering Damper - (couldn't fix due to lack of parts)
I also learned some valuable lessons (at great expense of the crowd!):
A) An LT Final Drive will go onto the bike W/O being engaged into
the driveshaft :o
B) An LT will NOT move W/O the Rear Drive being engaged into the
Driveshaft
C) If you are A.D.D., it is hard to concentrate and work on bikes in a big
crowd! :D
Anyway...I'm going to rest. Please guys...give a report if you attended. Good or bad, I need to know where we can improve. And thanks again to all...I thoroughly enjoyed the day!

Oh and a lot more showed up. It was difficult maneuvering in and out of the garage. At least 15 or 16 bikes outside including one Harley.
Thanks a lot for hosting the session Jack.

Free food? Sony Playstation? Large-screen TV? Heated garage? TWO LIFTS?
Holy cow, Jack has raised the bar on Tech Sessions. He has raised the expectation level for future attendees. We'll have to provide champagne and caviar for the next one!

Thanks Jack for a great time as usual....and a lot of work was accomplished to boot.
While my slave cylinder was dry as a bone.....at least we both discovered and had a good laugh about what happens when the driveshaft doesn't make a proper seat into the final drive!!!
Glad I was able to bring my Handy lift over so we could have 2 adventures going on simultaniously.

It was great meeting you and all the others. Special thanks to Weyman for giving up his slot. I know it saved me big bucks. I had a cold but great ride home. For those interested, my bike is a '99 with 33K. It appears that my slave cyclinder was just starting to leak. Thanks again Jack for your hospitality and mechanical knowlege.
