Just bought a 1996 RT in good faith. It's done 54,000 miles and on riding it home, I noticed the clutch slipping in 5th gear when on full throttle. I'm guessing it's not an adjustment thing? Will the clutch last a while if I'm gentle with it or will it need doing soon (and I'm also presuming it's a MAJOR job?)
Thanks

Simon

Simon,
FWIW. IIRC, your bike has a cable actuated clutch. I would perform an adjustment just to make sure that it is correct. Wouldn't hurt anything to check.
And yes, changing the clutch is major. (Just did one same year and model. Clutch spline let go at 58k.)

Good Luck!

I would definitely check for the free play adjustment at the clutch lever. I have seen this problem many times and adjustment fixed the problem most of the time. On the others it was usually caused by a rear main leak. There should be at least 7mm freeplay at the clutch lever. You should set the adjusting fitting to where there is 12 mm between the lock nut against the lever housing and the knurled adjuster then lock the nut down. If there is not 7mm of free play left you need to adjust the bolt and lock nut mechanism on the back of the tranny to get the proper freeplay at the handle. If there is not enough adjustment left then the clutch plate is in need of replacement.
