If you're talking about a used transmission out of the bike there isn't much you can check without opening it up. Look for signs of abuse, leaks, or obvious damage. Whether or not it wiil function properly will take a road test after install. You can try spinning the shaft by hand to see if it's locked up or has shifting issues but I wouldn't count on that as a dependable test. Why was it removed from the bike, do you feel the seller is being up front with you about it's history?
If it's the engine and tranny there is a little more to look at. I usually try to run a used engine before buying or installing it but with all electronics involved in an LT that would take a little effort to set up.

This motor and trans is from a crashed LT in the area with under 30K miles. I agree not much to check on the outside of the trans. Motor can inspect throttle bodies, Spark plugs and valve clearance to get a impression of internals etc..

With only 30K I wouldn't worry too much about the internal goodies. I'd be more concerned with crash damage to the case and exposed parts.
