Hi,
I am a fairly new R1200RT owner. How do you secure your helmet to the bike when you leave the bike. I am thinking about using a carbineer clip to go through the D-Ring and the mounting loop for the side bag. I also thought about putting a loop of some sort in the back of the nylon luggage rack for securing with a carbineer.

Here are a couple of suggestions from an LT rider.

When I have the room, it goes in my large top box, otherwise, this unit was very easy to mount and has worked well:

You know that long useless, annoying thin cable in the toolkit. It is for storing the helmets. Lift the seat, hook the cable on the open hook, string on the helmets, other end of the cable goes back to the hook, close the seat. tada!

I have a coated braided steel cable (like a bike lock cable) that I keep on the bike. I run it through my full face helment and jacket and lock them both up to the bike. My wife and I both use these and the biggest reason we went this route was because we didn't like having to wear or carry our riding jackets around with us if we stopped for a sight see. We keep a cable and lock on whatever bike we are using. It works well and is pretty cheap. I even made the ones we use.

Most of the time I just put in one of the side cases but when traveling with full cases I like the idea of using a bike lock cable to cable lock helmet and jacket to the bike.

Ditto on the Ztechnik. I use one on each of the rides. On the LT I have the hooks hanging down and on the K-R I have them point up.....very clean visually.
On the K-R we use it all the time....two helmets.
Most of the time on the LT, if the top case is empty, we just plop them in there. However, frequently the top case is not empty and it only takes a second to lock the brain buckets to the bike. Very convenient.

Honestly, I normally just leave mine leaning between the handlebars and the gauge pod. I figure if the guy is stealing helmets, he probably needs it more than I do. Been leaving them on bikes for years and never had a problem.
Of course, I don't do it at a movie theatre or office (unattended for hours) though. If I'm going in somewhere for a long time I just take it with me. Use your own judgment, but most people on vacation aren't looking to steal a maroon XL stinky-ass helmet.
Vandals who are "stealing to steal" are just going to do something else (like knock the bike over), and I'd much rather them take out their unchecked aggression on a helmet than my bike. Plus, securing the helmet by the chin strap only requires a small pocket knife to steal.

I used to always lock mine to the disc on the front wheel
That way the bike and helmet were both locked in one move.

On the LT we store ours on the seat, cable locked to the side box handles. With the frequency of pop-up rain showers, hanging them here in Florida is not a good idea. It takes a lot to get them to fall if the chin bars are "downhill".
