I just got my 2005 R12RT today. First impressions are very good. I like the way it handles very much.
I got two questions though
1. I want to install my Autocom Intercom. Is there anybody who has installed it and please tell me how you did it. I asked the dealer and he said I could bypass the Canbus system by connecting the Autocom directly to the battery. This because it only will turn on when you talk into it, so there should be no risk of battery drainage from the autocom and ending up with an empty battery. Anybody installed it this way? please some advice
2. My bike came with a BMW Navigator II, of which I'm very pleased.
There is just one but, concerning theft.... Do I really have to dismount it every time I park the bike? I mean that seems to be a nuisance, turning loose the screw, dismount the Navigator and vice versa every time you take a stroll.
Anybody with experience in this department? please share with me.
Thanks for any reaction

I can help on number 2.
It depends on were I am, I do or do not remove it.
A night, on the motel or camping I always remove it, unless I'm in a remote campsite, where I can tell nobody will botter to check the bike.
I undestand the new setup has a tine screw (or maybe not... that is what I saw in one bike), that is very umpratical to do it.
My bike I never installed that screw. Otherwise I'm using a big, easy to remove screw with head (no need for a tool to remove/put back).

The Navigator III has a security torx screw head. They also include a small screwdriver that will fit on your keychain. I have not removed the GPS, except to bring it into my car, or play with it inside. I guess I am a trusting soul (Or stupid).

I fitted an AutoCom system to my 12RT a few weeks ago I have taken +ve from the spare connector in the tail unit and -ve direct to the battery.
This means that the AutoCom turns on when you turn the bike on and off a minute or so after the bike.
I find this works very well and have had no problems with the setup.

Dave, where did you store the Autocom unit itself? Do you have it mounted in the tail, or somewhere up front? If in the tail, where do you have your headset cable accessible?

I will see if I can find that spare connector.

You can store the autocom under the passenger seat.
The connectors on the left side against the buddy, so I can hide them under the buddy's side. We both get up from the left.

Thanks for the info vintura.
On my current bike, I originally ran the Autocom under the passenger seat, with my headset cable coming up between the seat and the tank, and then later coming up between the two seats. Seemed like I was always pinching the cable there and started to develop a short, so I moved the entire unit to the front of the bike and put the headset cable up on the handlebars. As I start to consider moving all this stuff over to another bike, this info on where you guys are mounting things is most helpful.

Hi Dave,
an addtional question on the autocom.
Do you mean by spare connector the one that can be extra installed as an option on the left side in the tail?
I don't have that one. so I have to contact a dealer.

Sorry it has taken so long to reply but I was at BMW yesterday getting the fuel gauge sensor replaced on the RT
1. I mounted the unit in the tail above the alarm (if you have one) I attached it to the underside of the top surface this leaves a space between it and the alarm.
2. I don’t have the rear aux power socket either but the wiring loom on my RT has a automotive 2 pin connector available for use if you chose the option. It exits the loom near the rear light cluster. The back of this connector unclips exposing the two wires I just connected to one of them.
3. I have run the headset cables along the left side of the bike, pillion comes out between the two seats, and rider comes out next to the tank bag rack. All audio connecting leads from the I-Pod and the GPS have been run above the air-box but under the tank on the left hand side as the ignition unit is on the right.
I can take a photo tonight if you think it will help.

I guess you used velcron to tape the unit above the alarmunit.

I would also appreciate the photo if you have a chance.
I pulled the trigger on a new RT earlier this week. Take delivery on Friday, so I'll be rigging up my Autocom before too long.
