I have not seen much on this subject so thought I would throw it out there.
Do any of you have problems with your helmet cords? I have replaced 3 of them on the wifes helmet,(section from the bike to the helmet) the wire breaks right out of the plug and no sound. Have had no luck with warranty on this item either.
At CCR I thought molded earplugs would solve my problem only to discover there is no mike included. I am working on an alternate mike for the system. with different connections from the com plug.

There has been numerous posts about autocom's cords. Haven't heard much about other system cords.

No problems here, after several months of daily use. On several occasions I have closed the flip-front of my modular helmet and caught the helmet lead in the hinge. Each time I thought "Oh no, just broke the cable." It's never been a problem.
Baehr intercom and cables, FWIW.

Sorry to hear of your troubles...
My Intaride works great. They have "professional" 1/4 inch "stereo" style connections.. they are GREAT!

Since you have an LTE, I would guess that you also have the BC3 with the J&M built cords. Both of my LT's have had the BC3 and I have had to change out headset cords bout once a year for each of us.
My problem starts as a crackling on the intercom that activates the VOX and cuts out the music any time you move your head. Extremely irritating! I have talked on a few occasions to John L at J&M and he has repeatedly told me that it isnt the cord, but the cheap connector that BMW uses on the bike itself. I replaced the connector on my 2000 with his special connector and it made no difference.
Changing the cord has fixed it every time. My cords are the first series ( one piece cord from the helmet to the bike ). They are getting rare, and the only option after they are no longer available will be to buy new headsets and cords. J&M can not sell the cords to us directly due to their agreement with BMW. Sooooooo....I will be looking at different manufacturers when that time comes...Maybe Air Rider.

Did you know that PlugUp make an adapter for the intercom plug so you can listen to the comm system over the headset but use the stock mike?
I'm not sure why your cables keep going out, I have been using the same ones for 4 years without a problem at all.

J&M cords are warranty for 2 years.
If you have problem just send the cord and copy of your invoice back to then and they will replace/fix it.
The wife and my upper cords last for about 2 to 3 years (yep... out of warranty :( )
and the lower ones still good after 4 years and 60K miles

I just bought a used 05 LT and it seems to have all the bells and whistles. No one at the dealership can seem to take the time to show me how to use it all. I was in the Marines for 20 years so I figured out the GPS. I asked how much for the headset and cord to run the intercom that is already installed and I was told $800. Does that sound right? Or are there other alternatives.
Thanks In advance

Marc you can buy the headset from Sierra Electronics or from J&M. You will spend about $200 per headset and about $50 for the combined upper and lower cords. Total should be about $550 for passenger and rider.

The following will GREATLY reduce the cord failure:
Get two of those small spring loaded paper-clips and two thick rubber bands.
Loop-attach the clips to the cord near the helmet connector, you then use this as a strain relief on the cord to helmet connection (reduces the weight on the helmet also) by clipping it to your jacket or shirt with a little slack.
Go to a Scuba Divers store and buy a small tub ($4.50 or so) of SILICONE PASTE they use on regulators. This type is high quality and contains no petroleum byproducts.
Smear the paste on the all four male/female connections and on the rubber to rubber sections. Push in and out and re-apply.
I also put some on the small slip connectors that reside in the helmet.
The above makes disconnection easy, promotes good electrical continuity, and displaces moisture, keeps rain out, while the clips act as a strain relief.
I put the passenger plug next to the seat so the force would be straight down as opposed to sideways as in some installs. I put a 12 v. accessory outlet were the passenger headset sometimes goes.

I should have mentioned that you can only get the lower cables from your BMW dealer BTW.

Our Autocom cords have been in use for 3 years and no problem
I have an Autocom System and it is only a year old and the lower cables have had the outer jacket split. The loom that holds the speakers and the mic has now developed an intermittent open.
I ride a lot and this after about 25,000 miles.
I called Top Gear and ordered new cables. When I explained what was happening, the service or sales tech said that they advise running the cables inside your riding clothes to keep them from whipping around.
I have a young fortune in this setup or I would try the J&M setup. I may do it anyway.

Replaced once in the first year and covered under warranty for my wife...Then I saw her unplug it by pulling on the cord instead of the plug itself. No further problems in 4.5 years.
