Truth is most of us started with that opinion, then fidelity of the in ear speakers, not to mention the fatigue diminishing aspects as well as the convenience of two-way comm while riding with others overwhelmed us.

Now we would never go back.

Several good intercoms to choose from on the inexpensive end of the spectrum:
IntaRide RP-1
StarCom
IMC
even the new upgraded ChatterBox.
There are several "cheap" ATV units out there for intercom only.
OR-- just get two VOX operated FRS/GMRS units and wear them with the ear piece and mike inside the helmet.

Truly you WILL want a full-er featured intercom as time goes by.

This site has many tales of people starting out with budget-priced products; by the time you add up the cost of all the inferior or almost-good-enough products you bought (and had to install and then remove) you might as well go with a better product.

Friends of mine ride a new Gold Wing. The Wing already has the intercom installed at the factory; all they had to do was buy helmet headsets. But noooooo.... they wanted to save a few bucks so they bought a cheapie unit from JC Whitney; this thing has a wire running between their two helmets (out in the open). Poor performance. Now he's ready to buy the better products.

If it doesn't work perfectly you and your wife will be frustrated and not enjoy the ride. With this in mind, buy a Baehr intercom. True, the K1200LT model at $1200 is expensive, although it is plug and play and comes with helmet speakers and mikes but Baehr has a newer line of intercoms call the Blakeline series. The Active model is $449 and will allow for most of the popular features riders want. I tried one at Americade this year and the performance was excellent. See it here: http://www.baehrusa.com/Specs_ACTIVE.html

Their Solo model is $259, and has even fewer features if you want to stick with the very basic intercom, but get Baehr quality. See it here: http://www.baehrusa.com/Specs_SOLO.html

I have the IMC unit I bought the IMC MIT-100 from Sierra at this years Americade. The wife and I rode up to it without comms and she wanted to be able to communicate. I went ahead and bought the 100 that way I could ad radio in future, but haven't yet. I have tried to integrate my stereo, but wasn't happy with the results, but it may be more because I tried to build the circuitry instead of buying it.

In any event the quality of the sound and the fact that the IMC comes with the headsets for a decent price is what sold us. We are happy with the communication piece and I may still add radios in future, but truth is I ride 1 up most of the time so no hurry.

Another member has the IMC MIT-30 which is probably what you want or even the MIT-15. If you do a search you will probably find his thread. He was satisfied as well.

Good luck in your quest.
