I need some good advice on an intercom question. It is a little off the bike topic but I’ve found there’s some real knowledgeable folks here.

I have a pavement maintenance business and we do crack sealing on the roadways. We have a setup where a flatbed truck carrying an air compressor and propane supplies air for a man running a hot air lances out in front of the truck cleaning out the cracks in the pavement.

Another man is in the rear of the truck sealing the cracks from a melter that is being towed by the truck.

What I’d like to do is to be able for the three to communicate hands free so that the drive can know when to advance the truck etc.

The units for the guys outside of the truck should be setup like hearing protection, as it is noisy especially for the guy running the air lance. It is not critical that the guy on the lance be able to communicate but he should be able to hear what’s being said.

The system needs to be hands free.

Can anyone suggest a setup?

Thanks in advance… Mike

I would suggest speaking to Autocom or their distributors. Their list of customers includes racing teams and heavy truck builders so they can handle to noisy enviroment. Most Autocoms can be powered from a 9 volt battery and the speakers installed into ear defenders. HTH

Mike,

I agree with Graham about Autocom, especially considering their racing team work, which I didn't know about. I imagine you might wind up with custom molded earplugs with speakers and a small boom microphone arrangement of some sort. Also, what you will likely want to use to transmit and receive among yourselves will be either a UHF or VHF commercial radio (Motorola, Kenwood, etc.) for each man, most of which have a VOX feature allowing you to transmit and receive hands free. The reason I say a commercial radio, is because the good ones are built to Mil Spec to withstand industrial abuse (dropping, waterproof, etc.)
