I recently purchased a new windshield for my 1200LT. I have not changed one before and I don't want to tear something up in the process. How do the trim covers on the windshield mount come off and are there any other tips I need to know before tackling this?

The covers come off by pulling up on the INSIDE edges, rolling the cover off the spring catches. You have to pull pretty hard, and they snap off pretty loudly. After the covers are off, it is easy. Don't over torque the screws putting the windshield on, and DO NOT USE LOCTITE! Make sure the rubber pads under the shield are in place. Pay attention to the orientation of the stainless steel clip plates, and put them back on the same way. Put the covers back on by clipping the outside edges under the catches, roll the cover in toward the center of the bike, and slap it hard with the palm of your hand.

I used a thin putty knife to pry the chrome trim off my bike. Just be careful not to scratch you windshield. I thought I could distribute the stress a little more uniformly and reduce any potential twisting of the part with a wide blade rather than trying to peel it off with my fingers.

It is very simple,

I'd buy new screws that have encapsulated threadlock already on them. That makes sure they don't come loose from vibration.

If they come loose, mine did(used bike), it may cause a screw hole to crack.(mine did)

I think the screws were about a buck a piece at the dealer.

just my .02's :bmw:

When you're mounting a windshield by yourself it can be pretty hard to hold the shield in place while you fiddle with the screws and the clip plates. If the shield slides around or the clip plates dangle back in forth you risk scratching your windshield.
I set the windshield in place and just install the four screws without the stainless steel clip plates. After the shield is secured this way it's easy to remove one screw at a time and install the clip plates:
Remove one of the top screws and install the clip plate. Tighten the screw so it's snug and the clip plate will still rotate and with the clip plate resting just to the side of the bottom screw. Remove the bottom screw and rotate the clip plate over the bottom hole and re-install the screw. Repeat on the other side then tighten all four screws.
