Steve,
El Jeffe knows the roads up there very well, might shoot him a PM if he doesn't see this. Check the South Central section for the Red River Roundup messages from April and May, lots of loops to do on really good roads in New Mexico. Jeff posted these in a Mapsource file.
In Colorado, the Million Dollar Highway (US 550) from Durango north to Ouray is worth a ride if you're not afraid of heights. In New Mexico, US 64 from just a little north of Taos over to US 84, then north to Chama and into Colorado is a beautiful ride that goes through the Carson National Forest several times. I've detoured several times to make that one, just for the scenery and fast sweepers.
Dress warm, altitude and October can be weather intensive for us Texicans. And watch out for them damned horned rats and their bigger cousins...somehow they think that part of the country belongs to them!
Have a great trip!
