View Full Version : Can I jump start my LT?

My battery is only 3 months old, but due to an injury I was unable to ride for 2 weeks. Battery is completely dead (I 'love' this bike). I put a trickle charger on it over night and.... nothing. I know that once I get it started it should be fine, but I'd rather not buy a full-on charger/booster. I was thinking about a jump start, but I know motorcycles don't like this type of action. Any thoughts?

If you used a battery tender to charge it that won't work, it needs to see 3volts to start working. You could jump it then ride it for awhile then put it on the tender and it will bring it back up, or just go for a nice ride!

What kind of battery is it ?
Also.....
Just curious if anyone else had heard this?
I was told by my dealer that after speaking wi ann odyssey battery representative that its better\preferred not to trickle charg an odyssey battery..I would think it would be bull since odyssey sells a trickle charger for this battery...but who knows

So I could jump it like I would jump start a car? I thought that might burn something up.

Jump away. The alternator is so awesome on the LT that it will recharge the battery if you ride it awhile.

Thanks guys!!!By all means jump start it,
BUT.....be careful when stopping. If you close the throttle and hit the brakes the servos will, most likely, stall the motor.
Keep the rpms up around 2500-3000 when stopping for the first 20 minutes of riding it should be good.
Also, your electronics will probably be a bit out of whack until you charge up. Once up to level, you may need to disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset things. No big deal, just a "heads-up".

Still no go!!!! All the lights come on, but no start. I called the stealers service dept and he said he would give me a new battery since mine is only 3 months old... why don't I think this will work?
A new battery shouldn't drain dead in 2 weeks. I'm close to flat-bedding it to the dealer, having it fixed and putting it on consignment. I'm starting to see a NEW wing in my future. This isn't the only problem I've had with this gem... bike only has 10k miles on it.

Son! Don't get so darn depressed! You are about to through out the baby with the bath water! I doubt it is a very serious problem. Some batteries turn out to be "lemons."
If you don't think Wings have battery problems, check one of their forums! My Wing used to eat batteries!

and you should be OK. The trickle charger will take a while if the bike is completely dead, but it will, eventually, fire up, absent anything else being wrong.
As the battery recharges, you will get lights but no action (no start) for a while. Don't dismay.

True. I just got so pissed. I did finally get it started, drove it for 10 minutes and she died as soon as I got home. Would not restart. It's back on the charger. I'm going to take the dealer up on the new battery offer. Thanks for the help everyone!

My 2002 is on the original battery, 24,000 miles and only when it's not ridden for more than a few weeks is it ever on a charger. New battery should fix the problem.

I had the same type of trouble a while back. Once the battery was changed out I kept it on a Battery Tender for BMW gel cells. Not a problem since. I keep the boat and RV on a Tender as well. I highly recommend them.

Unless the battery has a shorted plate.

Me again... The new battery did the trick. Bike fired right up. Question... Do I have to use a 'special' trickle charger for a gel battery. The one I have I purchased for my 04 Harley.
-Edit-
I think I just answered my own question since the Harley battery is also a gel battery.

Rick, what battery is it? Odyssey? BMW? Yuasa? Westco?
Just an FYI - I have an Odyssey AGM battery that frequently stays charged on a Deltran Battery Tender Plus, or a VDC Electronics BatteryMINDer Plus. Either charger works fine, and the Odyssey is approximately 4 years old, still testing good.
A website where you can read all you never knew ( ;) :) ) about batteries and chargers is http://www.vdcelectronics.com ! HTH a leetle.

Glad the new battery did the trick. Any more problems just give a shout. Lots of fellow riders in our area who are pretty good at wrenching.
