I took a great little ride yesterday east on Hwy 32 out of Chico and then connected with 89 and went to the entrance of Lassen Park. I returned back to Chico by taking Hwy 36 to Red Bluff and then down 99.
Hwy 32 is a blast to ride, just 5 minutes out of Chico it starts getting fun and just gets better and better as you go east. Talk about high speed sweepers! There's some nice rivers, streams and meadows along the way. When you connect to 89 it is your typical rural bucolic mountian area. I think the altitude is around 6000 feet and goes up from there, with more meadows, streams and a few bed and breakfast along the way.
Coming back on 36 could be described as dull, with straight areas that go for 4 to 6 mles, no cars to be seen and if nothing else its a great spot to hit triple digits (not that I did ;) )
Last bit to throw out here is if your hungry don't eat in Red Bluff unless you want a fast food chain restaurant... There isn't one good place to eat there.

Scott;
Yesterday I wrote up 89 (around the lake) and back down back down 70. We were close at some point.. :)

The morning was super riding weather when I left. Light cloud cover and cool allowing me to get out of the valley before the heat.

Next time I will take 32. Maybe 32 over to the coast via 36 and back.
