Seattle Area Tech Session

There has been some recent discussion of holding a tech session up near Seattle. The guys in Portland have done this several times with great success, as well as groups from several other areas.

I'll be up in the PNW area at the end of October, so if people are interested, maybe we can hold a tech session up that way. Does Sunday, October 30 work for anyone?

I can bring my experience, and I'm sure some of the locals can provide the necessary tools. We'll need someone to provide a garage or other suitable working space.

Anyone interested in either helping or learning?

It would be great to have some kind of event in Seattle. The only problem is the ride would be "Short" to get to the event LOL.

If you think my garage is suitable I maybe interested in hosting. I'll have to check with the redhead to see if I'm available that day???? It will not be the fancy spread that Ernie and Pauline put on. Perhaps more like hamburgers,hotdogs, and yes Art, beer.

I was thinking of you, Brian, but didn't want to offer your place ahead of you. Your garage should be fine. We'd have to stack bikes in line rather than side-by-side, but that shouldn't be a problem.

I suppose it depends on how many bikes want/need work. If we get a lot of bikes torn down it might be tough, but if we stick to maybe two then we should be OK. Or if someone else has a two car wide garage, then maybe we could get to three bikes if needed. Again, it depends on whether this is a "get lots of work done" day or a "see how easy a 12K service really is" day. I'm happy with either, so I'll leave that up to the locals.

If we do want to do a 12K service, then I can send a list of the parts required so they can be on hand ahead of time. As for chow, simple is fine, as it's more the company and the chance to learn that will draw folks. (OK, and maybe some beer as well.)

Of course, I'm assuming that it will be raining, so any outside work is less likely. :)

Looks like its a go for the 30th of october. Since I do not have to drive anywhere I think I will do my 36k service a little early. I will most likely have access to another garage across from mine. So we can work on a minimum of 4 bikes probably more. Anybody interested in 12k 36k service? Hid install? Well I guess almost anything. Everybody is welcome. The location will be downtown Tacoma waterfront area.

Hey Brian, if I'm back from training down south (supposed to get back on Sat, but it could change) I'd love to come up and say Hi! How you fixed for tools? If you need anything special let us know. Like we said in a previous post: "have Torque wrench, will travel"! Course you probably have plenty of those being in your line of business, eh?

I'm coming due for my first 12K service, but I'll be out of town during the end of October. Any time after 5 Nov works for me. If this doesn't work for the group, I'll have to ask everyone to consider a second date for those unable to attend on the 30th.

Hope I can help facilitate this. My LT is my first BMW after many other makes, so I really would like to join in on the "fun."

Sorry if you can't make it on the 30th, Jon. You're one of the guys I had in mind in setting this up. Unfortunately, I'll be back down south by the 5th, but there are lots of guys up that way that know the LT. I'm sure they'll do another session sometime that works better for you. Heck, I'm likely to be up again soon enough, as my Portland customer seems to be getting busier.

Or we could blow off the tech session thing and just go riding. :D

I do have a ladder, I built it lightweight since I work on aircraft for a living. Its also screwed down!!! I can probably access a few torque wrenches if needed from work. I must admit I normally don't use them. Calibraded wrist usually gets me by unless I am torqueing something extreme like jet engine mount bolts. If you can't make it on the 30th, I am sure I can help you out on another day with most maintenance especially 12k and such. Ken lives in S cal and can only make it on the 30th. Ken,John, and Ernie are the real pro's and hopefully can make it to help us out with the high tech stuff.

Sounds like a plan to me. We will have to get stuff together and I'll have to see if there is something that I can add to my bike in case there is time. Maybe I'll actually do more than provide comic relief and moral (or is that immoral??) support.

Like Ken said in his send, most of us Oregonians would be more than happy to lend a hand to get things going up there. Main thing will be the actual dates pecked and how our calendars are with work related stuff for those of us who still only dream of retirement that is!

And Brian, just ask anyone who was at Ernie's last Tech Session and they will tell you who the Newton Meter expert is! I wouldn't worry about borrowing any Torque wrenches from work since both Art and I can provide for that as long as one of us can make it up. Eh Art?

And if the weather is too much for the Bikes I'm sure we can share a cage as long as we can plan ahead.

The more Maint you can do on your own the more affordable the LT is. And there is not much of the basic Maint that is more than simple tasks once you get down to it! More money for riding or Farkles!

Needless to say I would really like to attend but I cannot tell you how many things I have signed up for; only to cancel because I have been on "standby."

If it is at all possible I will be there. Sadly, I can't be counted on.

larger garage, I may be able to help out but I don't have a lift as of yet.

Myself and Lance from Redmond were just down in Portland at Ernies house for
a tech session and could lend a helping hand.

I should have plenty of room with the 2 garages. Plenty of paved parking.They are 30 feet from each other. But..... if some one has a better spot with a lift. My garage works good for me for the fact that I have lots of work planned and may not be able to complete it in one afternoon. This way I can leave the bike dismantled and come back to it another day.

Thanks for the assist re: the tech session up here in Seattle. I'll stay engaged with the other locals and see if I can swing something. Either way, keep me posted on your next trip up this way. Always looking for another riding option. I'm from SoCal originally too and my primary riding partner is in Santa Maria.

Yep, another time, Jon.

I'm in Oxnard now. I was just reading a review of several sport-tourers in Cycle World, and they talked all about Highways 33, 154, 166, and several of the backroads. I just grinned, as these are right in my backyard, and I'll sometimes take that whole loop just to get out for a day ride. :D

They also had an article on the Solvang Motorcycle Museum. I've never been, but I figure it could be a fun group ride. Maybe in January, when we usually get our mid-winter heat wave. :)

The tech session sounds like a great idea, guys, and I really wish I could be there (not that I have much if any technical expertise, but to at least see/meet everybody!). Unfortunately, I'll be in Indonesia on an underwater photography trip the end of October and early November. So I'll have to catch you on the next go 'round!

I finally drove Chuckanut drive yesterday!!!! It was pretty good. The weather was perfect. I have noticed that it has been very quiet on the NW forum lately. (again) Are we still having a tech session next Sunday?
