I was starting to plot Old Highway Route 66 into MapSource when it dawned on me that someone else might have already done it? So...does anyone have it or will I get to be the first?

D'oH! I don't see how watching a guy ride down Route 66 helps Skip at all. I think he was hoping for someone to offer a MapSource .gdp file.

I found a list of waypoints along route 66 that someone had made.
It was of "Interesting things", not the route itself.

I'll see If I can find the link.

Using Google is really tough because there is navigational software called "Route 66" that muddies up the hits. :(

Then you got to try this road... highway 191 from Clifton, AZ to Alpine AZ----this road is in eastern AZ and is about 90 miles in distance----it is the curviest road in the united States----435 hairpin curves----takes about 4 hours to go 90 miles---click on the link below for more info----

I did this road for the first time in May this year...there was snow when arriving in Alpine....The road is more fun going up from Clifton to Alpine....Liked the power going up hill. My Dad and I did it in about 3.5 hours....You know the GW and Dad is 78 took their time. You and the GT could get to know eachother on this road...Knee pucks would be advised....

I dunno Jeff. As fun as that road sounds, my "Route 66 trip" would be a little more about staying the course and just cruising for the sake of experiencing Route 66. Make any sense? Then again, by the time I get there it might be hightime for some peg scraping...we'll see.

I don't think I could do the whole thing.
I'm getting close to being forced to get a new job (Long Story), and probably won't have much leave.

I could do part of it.

I'm sure if you post your plans, you'll get several people that'll join up for at least part of it.

I would think it might get a bit complicated and lose some of the luster trying to organize a big deal (Just my opinion.. Don't like big crowds, Don't like riding in large groups)

BTW, after Tulsa Oklahoma, you'll be looking for some twisties, and they probably won't be along 66. Might want to plan quick detour every once in awhile, or make sure that you really want "the experience" before setting out.

Also, most of original Route 66 roads are in pretty bad shape. Here in Oklahoma, I think we have some of the better, longer stretches, just not too many curves in them. Lots of nice small, old, towns to go through.

I think the trip would be a blast !!

Wouldn't worry Shawn... Not enough curves !! I pretty much stick to limit or 5 over when its straight.

We both might get a quick glimpse of Joes Tail lights though ;)

Opps..Guess I should intro my self Jeff Goodwin ....LT is mine first BMW and I am very impressed with Her ...Been riding over 40 years mostly Hondas. Raced motorcycles for about 25 years..I am getting up to speed on the internet and this forum stuff(sorry not very PC correct YET )..Never been a member of any forum until joining this one(still learning). Looking forward to some day meeting you. You are one of the famous Bikers in this forum and I have been enjoying your humor for almost a year. The road I mention HWY 191 used to be called HWY 666...This road fits its name the devil almost got me close to the top...My LT went sideways just like the flat track days and almost lost member ship to the ZMDC ...Quiet amazing if you never been there...reminded me of endurance racing days the turns go on for longer than you could ever imagine, and the views are great! Most of the road has NO guard rails. It takes you through the world's Largest open pit mining...If you never seen monster mining trucks these where impressive, tires alone are 16 feet tall...Hope its o.k. chime in again...? I have yet to ride with a new GT and am looking forward to chasing it in the mountains some day. My next bike to join my LTs garage will be K1200S already started saving $$, only problem is the LT keeps taking me on these long trips and they costs.

It will be a hoot for sure, i've done most of 66 over the years, when we moved from Chicago to So Cal in the late 60's me and my Mom took 66, so it is one of those things I had to do as a adult (well ok older, don;t think i will ever make ADULT status) so much of it is broke up now and many places are dirt that just end in no where land

some interesting info, but the gpx file was really just waypoints - and not all of them either! For example, the Blue Whale in Catoosa was missing.

The site does have the detailed directions - almost turn-by-turn...

This looks like it will be a manual effort, but none-the-less, should be 'fun' and educational....

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I stirred up a little conversation. I have the route in mapsource from Chicago to Kansas, but that part alone took over four hours. I'm using the historic66.com site for info. I guess I was just looking to cheat a little. I am having fun looking into the history as I map it though, so I guess I'll just plug away.

Joe - I got the idea the same way you did. Entire family loved "Cars" and while I was walking out of the theater, I decided that I was going to ride full route "someday". Looks like I'm not the only one, and "someday" might come sooner than expected with the interest this post stirred up. I just started plugging it in to mapsource to see how much time it would actually take. Was thinking about two days from Denver to Chicago, hoping for 5 days on 66, and 1 day back to Denver from Santa Monica. Sound like a great 7 days to me. If I actually get around to it, I'll let everybody know.

I'll second that road. It is my favorite. Our most recent spin through was in April. It took us about 2 1/2 hours from Morenci to Alpine including a stop to find the arrow tree. First time in twenty years my wife got motion sickness on a bike. Oops.

Well, I have most of Oklahoma done for you/us... A few things I noticed that will need to be taken into account... 1) there are some roads MapSource thinks are there that I KNOW aren't and, 2) a lot of the route out in western OK follows the I-40 frontage road - no big deal until Map Source makes a break in the road for no reason...:mad:

There are bits and pieces here and there.
Even some of the frontage roads dead end.

Some are on private property now.

You can approximate the route, by following I-40 in places, but the original, for most parts, seems to be left to mother nature.

The stretch from Tulsa to El Reno is in pretty good shape.

Out By Elk City or Clinton (Can't remember now), I found a part that was only about 500 yards long.

there are some pretty cool museums out that way, I think I have some waypointed someplace, I know i have the routes i have done on my laptop, I should have sent it home with Jo so he could try and get the files off it

heheheh, i found that one as well, had to turn around fast it turned to mush, some reason i think that one was in Arizona, what is really nbeat is that you can see some of the old road bed, I sat and though about when I was a kid and me and my mom drove to ca from chicago when we moved there, it was my first driving experience I was like 8

sometimes group rides can be fun, things like the route 66 would make it a hoot, I'm in search of the time to hit old ghost towns one day
