Hi Charlie,
If a part of the mirror is broken, there is no need to buy a complete mirror. It consists of several parts that can be ordered from the dealer separately. Assuming from your nick you've got a champagne LT. That will give you the following partnumbers:
http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/7696/mirror7iy.jpg
1. painted part Champagne 51.16.2.347.389 ± € 40,-
2. outer housing black 51.16.7.670.953 ± € 30,-
2. outer housing chrome 51.16.7.951 ± € 75,-
3. inner housing; black 51.16.2.347.199 ± € 17,50
4. adjusting unit 51.16.2.347.188 ± € 10,30
5. mirror glass 51.16.2.347.237 ± € 21,-
p/nr. 2 holds the clips and is quite susceptive to breaking. Search the HoW (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/faq.php?faq=bmwlt_net_faq#faq_hall_of_wisdom) for instructions on how to take the mirror apart.
For 2nd hand mirror parts you can try your luck on sites like eBay, but I don't think you'll find much mirror parts.
