Hi all,
Our long trip is getting closer and my buddy Jouko and myself have made a route plan from Calgary to Braselton. We have altered our original plan (from Feb-March) plus we have added Denver (or Aurora) CO as our waypoint. I have my “American brother” living there who I have not seen since 1974.

This time we are not asking for new route suggestions as obviously they are difficult to give to people whose interests you don’t know, we fully understand that. We also appreciate the hints that we have received so far.

As this is quite a long ride for us in a foreign country we have tried to prepare ourselves as well as possible. We even try to carry one spare rear drive bearing set (which we try to get from Canada / USA as Europe is still living in the 19 ball era…).

Anyway, we also have a list of BMW dealers of America. What we don’t have actually is a list of fellow LT (or other BMW riders) whose help we could ask in case of something unexpected happens en route. It sure would be nice to have a local phone number to call if needed. If you find yourself within reasonable distance from our route and you could PM your contact info to us, we would highly appreciate that. (Don't worry, your address & phone nr will not be distributed any further from us...:p )

Our rough route plan goes as follows:

Wed Aug 16: Calgary AB – Banff AB – Radium Hot Springs BC

Thu Aug 17: to Elko BC – Roosville BC (cross the border) – West Glacier MT

Fri Aug 18: to Koyl MT – Wolf Creek MT – Boulder MT

Sat Aug 19: to McAllister MT - West Yellowstone MT

Sun Aug 20: to Canyon Junction WY – Bear Creek WY – Sheridan WY

Mon Aug 21: to Gillette WY – Devils Tower – Sturgis SD – Mt. Rushmore SD – Custer SD

Tue Aug 22: to Lusk WY – Cheyenne WY – Aurora CO

Wed Aug 23: to Florence CO – Walsenburg CO

Thu Aug 24: to Folsom NM – Pampa TX – Elk City OK

Fri Aug 25: to Chickasha OK – Ada OK - Talihina OK

Sat Aug 26: to Mena AR - Hot Springs AR – Moon TN

Sun Aug 27: to Corinth TN – Collinwood TN – Hohenwald TN – Lewisburg TN

Mon Aug 28: to Ducktown TN – Tellico Plains TN – Robbinsville TN – Braselton GA

Now don’t ask me what is the idea behind all those little cities on our route! They just looked like proper waypoints on the Garmin map and as I said some parts of our route have been contributed by the board members. (If somebody is interested in the map itself I can email it or can I attach it on the regular forum post, I don’t know.)

I also take the opportunity to ask if there is anybody riding from Braselton towards Toronto on Sat – Sun right after CCR ? We would need to get to Toronto by Sunday evening and would appreciate having somebody local helping us to find the right (and fast enough) way.

Thanks in advance for your interest

Regards

Matt

Ari,

Have you thought of joining BMW Motorcycle Owners of America? One of the benefits is the "Anonymous Book". It has addresses and phone numbers of fellow members in just about every town in the US and many in Canada. The book also lists dealers and motorcycle laws by state. For more info their website is: www.bmwmoa.org

Good luck on your trip and I hope you have a great time!

Ari,

If your route back to Toronto takes you through NY via Buffalo/Niagara Falls area and you need a contact name let me know. I live about 2 1/2 hours from Niagarag Falls and have a Lake Cottage only about 1 hour from Niagara Falls which I am at on weekends in the Summer. I would be more than happy to help out if you needed it. Let me know if your route is that way and I will PM you my info.

What Brian just said! Even though we may not be on your route, we're all just a keystroke away if you need assistance Ari! Especially those of us who are not able to make the trip to CCR. We will be watching the screen for anything connected with the annual get together! And wondering where it is going to be next year!!!

Hi Ari, sorry for the late reply. I'm sure that the members on this board will help out, but as per an earlier post the MOA Anonymous Book is a fantastic resource. I have the '06 copy and would be happy to post it to you if needed. I think that's OK to do? Recommend joining any ways as the monthly magazine always has good articles too. Let me know, and have a safe trip. Cheers

Ari,
I have a freezer full of steaks and a Grill as big as the LT!! I am on your route from Aurora to Florence to Walsenburg, so give me a call if anything is needed. Something should happen you can even take my LT if you have any problems as long as you bring it back with all the same gadgets yours has.... :D

Since your coming this way....any chance I could get a duplicate right control bar switch assembly that you made?? I would gladly compensate you for it.

Regardless, I would love to meet up with you guys, when you come through, I got your dinner, whether at my place or on I-25 somewhere.

If you have trouble, just get on this site. I have just like many other members of this community a copy of BMW Anonymous and would be happy to e-mail you some contacts in your area should you have problems.

I want to thank you all for the advise and bunch of invitations to visit / stay overnight during our ride. We also received some good hints on what roads to choose etc.
The only sad thing is that we only have the 13 days to cover the distance of about 6300 map kilometers. (This may not sound like much for the experienced long haulers but I think it will be quite a challenge for us. )We would love to make a stop and say hi to all of the board members who have invited us to come over but we would probably need another two weeks to make it to CCR in time.:p

We also got many offers of borrowing / having the famous BMW "Anonymous Book" in case we end up in distress somewhere en route. Dick the Moderator was the fastest to drop in the mail so I think one copy will be enough for us. We hope that we will not need the book for anything else than calling somebody and checking the weather...:) .

Oh well, still have to finish some final gadgets (need one more set of Hella HIDs + my onboard videocam equipment + one 220V inverter + ....etc)
Departure day Aug 11th comes fast.

Hi Ari,

Dick is a wonderful guy. I know eggaxtly how to thank him. You go to one of the KrispyKreme shoppes, and buy him all the tastes. Don't be surprised when he eats them all :)
And of course $tarbuck's Kkkkaffeee klatch gets him talking....

Have a great trip!

Hello Victor, and thanks for the good wishes!

I fully agree about Dick and I would surely like to offer him the KrispyKreme selection. The only problem is that he will not be at CCR this year and our route seems to be going a bit far from his playground. :(

And I also want to take the opportunity to thank you for the nice chat we had at the LT-Treffen and especially for the little blinking heart you apparently installed on my bike. It took me a while to figure out how to turn it off as I did not want to wear out the battery in the bag...:)

See ya next year in Berlin, right?

Talihina, OK to Mena AR, you must be taking the Talimena Scenic Drive (http://www.talimenascenicdrive.com) , Good choice, but Pampa, TX. I was born out there and I love the desolation and straight roads. Be sure that you stay on the paved roads, there is a lot of sandy roads, and nothing but cows for company if you get stuck. :)

Hey Bo, The best part of Amarillo to Pampa is the BNSF mainline runs along side the road for a long ways. Wife was born in Amarillo and I started my career with my current employer based out of Borger.

Ari, you might want to consider modifying your route a bit to come down the "spine" of the Rockies instead. Besides more interesting riding (as in curves and fantastic scenery) you'll be into MUCH cooler temperatures as well. Your current routing from Canada to Sturgis and Devil's Tower (yawn) is REALLY boring, straight as an arrow for the most part - and it can be upwards of 35C in that area in August along with ferocious wind and thunderstorms... east of the Rockies is where all the really rotten weather happens.

Yellowstone Park in Northwestern Wyoming is probably one of the most magnificent places on this plant. You really need to see it.

If you drop down into Colorado from the north from Yellowstone via Craig, CO I've got plenty of extra space in my home and garage, and I'm all of 5 minutes off of Interstate 70 near Vail. Aurora (Denver) is two hours away to the east.
Open invitation... :bmw:
