I have purchased valve shims from San Jose BMW and BMW of Mountain View - $21.00 each. They're not in stock, not willing to let me trade out or buy what's in the shop, but more than happy to let me order. Not real good when doing a valve adjust on a Saturday. Have to button it back up and then order and re-do it all when they come in.

Inconvenient.

I called Chicago BMW. Don't have in stock but will order. Same as local shops. Will mail to my house....cool, I don't have to make a trip to order and a trip to pick up. Very cool.

The list price for the shims....is $14.00. With the discount....about $10.50 each. Mailed to my house.

My local shops were charging me 50% over list and did not have the shims in stock.

Screw them. Screw my trying to support my local dealer and have a decent relationship with them.

I just did my 48k maintenance. I can't wait to do my next one and see how much the parts kit is for that....hell, maybe I'll order it when I get back from Canada so I'll have it on the shelf when I'm ready to do the job.

In fact, for that price....I can stock my own shims and never have to button up a not-quite-done job again for lack of parts.

two thumbs up to Chicago BMW.

Good for you, Mark. Make sure you record all your current shim sizes and keep that in a safe place. Next time you see a tight valve, just go back to your sheet and order one size smaller for that position. No need to pull the cams to check 'em.

Regards to you and Lynn.
