Hello guys.
A friend of mine who used to post a lot on this forum (Stefan) once told me that it exists a BLACK reflective tape. I think he told me it was produced by 3M but it is not available where I live.
I wonder if someone has ever try it and could tell me if it is really efficient and if it reflects lights during night as a white one.
Also would you know where I could order it online ?
Cheers !

Raffy carries a reflective tape kit that I make for the LT. It comes with the 3M tape and templates for the trunk handle, license plate holder, and a few other spots. You can check it out at: http://motogear4you.com/mcart/index.cgi?code=3&cat=6

Take a look at pictures of my previous LT. Take note of the top case handle that is black at daytime, but reflects white at night when light shines on it:

The tape I used is not 3M, but Avery (http://www.reflectives.averydennison.com/films_main.html). Also one of the leading brands at this side of the pond.

I got some 4"x8" 3M sheets for around $3 each on eBay.
It's not quite as good as the white stuff, but it sure
looks better during the day. It's fair-to-piddlin' (as
dear old pop used to say) at night.
See the 1" stripe around my trunk below. That's at
dusk with a cameraflash. It's not quite that bright
with ambient / headlights on the streets.

Hey guys,
Just an FYI, I am a 3M rep and I handle the reflective products from 3M. I won't sell you anything but prefer you use some of our own vendors on this site. I am however the go to guy for questions and how this stuff works.

Does 3M make a 1" wide tape that is black and reflects red?
Can you refer me to a dealer who sells on-line? Part Number?
Thanks

And, since I have a few sheets left-over, what's your opinion on the best place to put it on the LT? Do headlights reflect more of it if placed on the topcase, or are the rear-facing parts of the saddlebags better shaped for reflectivity?

I believe this is what you are looking for. Any color and many sizes. I have ordered lots from Galls and the service is great. Really easy to cut your own sections and detail the bike however you desire.

Guys, I need your advice. I plan to stick letters as a commercial on the topcase of my LT. See the attachment. I wonder if the phone number 0 675 675 675 (it's a cell phone number in France) will be easily readable at night when lit by car's low beam ? I know it reflects a lot so I wonder if all the caracters may be too close one from the other... Any opinion?

Also, I wanted to ask you where to buy that black reflective tape that would come in one large piece. I assumed the kit from reflectivedecal comes in several small parts but to do my commercial on the bike I would need 2 or 3 sheets that would measure approx. 23 x 16 inches... Or smaller if not available...

It will be easy to read at night.
Man, your thumbnail is loaded with pops up and other crap - not very good etiquette for a private bulletin board.... It's as rude as an American tourist in Paris! :p
So, are using your LT as a Taxi for taking just one passenger, or is it an ad for a separate business?

Yes, I'll use the bike as a cab to transport one person at a time. From airports and also downtown, trainstations... wherever in fact. The traffic in Paris is a real nightmare and the only way to get to a meeting on time is riding a motorcycle or using a Bike cab :)
Does this kind of service exist in the US ?

Guys, I work in a sign shop and owned a graphics shop fro 10 years. I have seen two different black reflectives. One reflects white at night, the other gold or yellowish. Not sure the brand of each. the brand I used on my Vstrom came from a local distributor and was a "house brand". At any rate, you may be able to contact your local sign shops for bulk sheeting that you can cut yourself. Reflectives are a higher dollar item, so if you wanted a whole roll, may want to go in with a buddy.
Vinyls normally come in like 15", 24", 30" and 48" rolls, 10 yds to a roll if you want a whole roll. A 15" x 10 yd roll would be expensive, but not too bad if you had several people go in on a roll. You might even get the sign shop to cut out lettering or whatever too. I cut my name in black reflective for the back of my helmet and that looked pretty good.
Good luck. Email at rcarlisle@surry.net if you have any other questions

To Warren H,
There is no red tape at day that reflects white at night. The red tape will be red at night. The only tape I'm aware of that looks white at night but black during the day is the 3M 680 CR 85. This tape is reflective but uses a semi transparent black top film that gives the illusion of being black. The night time reflectivity is not as good a white reflective film but looks good. The tape being used in various kit forms is on the lower scale of retroreflectivity. These tapes measure 30 to 40 candlepower. There are reflective tapes on the market used for highway signing that are over 550 candlepower.
