So, I have committed to removing the rear wheel to take it in for a new tire. I seem to recall reading somewhere that this is a no brainer. Is it a no brainer for the mechanically disinclined? Is there anything I can f**k up when doing it? Do things need to be torqued? Am I worrying about things too much? Will my hands get dirty? :)

yeah, you do want to torque the wheel back on.

Well shoot, I guess that means I need a torque wrench. What should I avoid in buying one?

Definitely torque that rascal back on per manual and watch for the skinny spacer that goes between the wheel and hub. I always recheck torque after about 50-100 miles (unless wheel starts to come off before that):D

Get the clicker torque wrench. Easy to use and not too expensive from Harbor Freight. I got one at Lowes for about $60-$70 and it works pretty good.
