This may be a stupid question. What other GPS units will fit on the 06 BMW mount? I saw somewhere that Garmin makes one that has XM built in, will this fit? Or am I limited to the BMW unit.

Yes...Garmin's new 2820 will fit.

It will fit but I don't believe you can use the buttons on the mount. I believe they are only firmwared into the BMW head.

Can you adapt Garmin 2820 to the stock mount?

Can you adapt Garmin 2820 to the stock mount? No need to adapt to make it fit. But there is no way to make the left 4 buttons work on the BMW cradle, according to Lee's statement.

Joe is correct. The form of all the 2XXX GPS is the same and based on what I have seen and discussed with my dealer, they all fit into the BMW cradle and will receive power and I believe, send audio to the system. But, the extra 4 buttons on the cradle are firmware propriatary to the BMW GPS head. I got that dirctly from Garmin.

OK Next dumb question, what do these four buttons do and can you use the unit without them? I have never messed with navigation, I was just looking for a way to add xm and nav without 2 pieces.

No big deal.

I could be wrong, but I think the 4 functions are similar to the ones if you touch the screen on any 2xxx series, they Zoom in, Zoom out , Enter & Esc Etc. A bit easier with a gloved hand, but not essential, the functions are still readily available using the touch screen.

I just looked at my mount, no buttons. Just 4 screws and 2 cords, 1 power and 1 audio. Is this just on 06 models?

The four extra buttons come with the GPS if you buy it from BMW. If you buy from Garmin (or a reseller), then no extra buttons. Those functions are available through the Garmin touchscreen menus, they're just easier to reach with dedicated buttons. The BMW GPS also comes with all the dealers pre-loaded, but you can add those easily enough to a Garmin unit.
