View Full Version : Anyone here got/had a recent R1200GS?

I have had an offer of a few days in the alps on a R1200GS. Now I have only ridden 2 bikes in the last 15 years (ST1100 and a K1200lt) Is it sensible to take up the offer - the most challenging roads on a 'new' bike to me? Or is it quite and easy bike to get the hang of?
Thanks in advance

I have a 2005 R1200GS.
It is quite easy to ride compared to the other two mentioned because of weight. It is also taller, so reach may be of concern, depending on inseam length.
It has reasonable power, but doesn't seem like it for some reason. You actually accelerate quite quickly, but has the boxer, tractor motor feel to it.
It has a fantastic lean angle. With stiff preload, it may even washout before touching anything, unlike the K1200LT that will grind away the centerstand, footpegs, and even fairing.
The front seems a little light at times. Some have jacked up the preload to max, others set it at 3.
I would definately start slow and get the feel of it before you "hang off".
Range on mine is about 200-230 per tank with light coming on at 160-190.
Enjoy and send us some pics when you get done !!

I was worried about the hight - I have 32" inside leg - too little?

I have a 31" inseam and can tiptoe it on both sides, so if you're 32", it shouldn't be a problem.

And I guess if its lighter than a KLT it doesnt matter if its on the lean a bit?

Not at all, it is quite easy to lean and easy to pick up.
After dropping mine in the sand/dirt, I was able to pick it up via the handlebar method as opposed to having to use the butt to seat method like on the LT.
Me thinks you're worrying too much !!
If I was in your shoes, I'd just go for it and enjoy the Alps.
Like all new rides, just take it easy the first few miles while you are adjusting.
It shouldn't take long, though, because it is such a lighter bike than the other two you mentioned.

I'm sure you're familiar with "Motorcycle Journeys Through the Alps and Corsica" (http://www.whitehorsepress.com/product_info.php?products_id=3753&whpsid=eda4faccbd50e8418865722e53b10120) by John Hermann. It's a great resource.

Your inseam should not be an issue. I have a 31" inseam and can get one foot on the ground, or the toes of both. I also take my 1200GS off road and have never had a problem with the height. I had no problem transitioning to the GS. Easy bike to ride.

Do any of you use the GS as a two-up tourer? I've seen some folks out and about loaded as if the GS was an LT and they seemed to be very able and happy. The 830lbs. of LT always has me looking for a lighter more nimble alternative but 80% of my riding is two-up tourring.

There is a couple (Markus and Katie) here in NorCal that ride the GS as you describe. She seems happy on pillion.
When....er, if, I get a GS, it'll be set up for two-up. I don't think I'd use it for two-up LD riding. There is no beating the LT for eating up miles and the Mrs. MUST remain happy.

Ask Tom and Rosie Sperry. They did the Iron Butt rally on a GS, two up!

Been there and one it now!
Instep was no problem at all - feet flat!
Mate hired the KTM and although he liked it, we swopped for a bit and I didnt like it at all.
GS is awsome - next on my wish list of bikes!
Did 3 alp passes and a small section of off road, wish we had done more off road. Gave me the feeling that I could have gone anywhere.
Trip report soon in appropriate place, but thanks all who eased my mind.
