Garmin has to have the most confusing website in existence. I just purchased V7 of City Navigator North America, then went to their website to find this. Is it available or not?

If you recently purchased V7, the update unlock should be free. Order the CD, and when you go to the website to unlock it there should be no charge. If you are not registered for V7 recently, you would have to purchase V8, so go ahead and install and register your V7 first if you have not already done so.

On that page is a sentance in the "Pricing and Availability" section:
"MapSource software that does not display a red buy button beside it may be temporarily out of stock or not yet available."
It might as well be v9 or v10 for all the good it does.
I bought a refurb unit and ordered the free upgrade from v6 to v7 two months ago and they still won't tell me when it ships. It will be obsolete when I finally get it (that is, if v8 ever ships).

Since I have a lot of 2610s and a NAVII, I called Garmin this morning to find out the status. Here is what I was informed:
"The full version of V8 is shipping to dealers and OEMs today. However, V8 upgrade is not available yet, and they do not know when it will be.".
Since 99.99% of us need the upgrade, not the full version (less money), his statement was almost useless. The person I spoke too was the worst I ever spoke with at Garmin.
You can click the box that will email you when the V8 upgrade is available via the website.

I just got off the phone with Garmin also. I was told that my upgrade will be to v8 instead of v7. (They must've run out of v7 DVDs). The service rep did tell me that early August was the ship date for the upgrades. This jives with their past update schedule: http://www.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp .

I have v6. I ordered v7 back in April for my upcoming vacation. Right away I got back a message saying it will ship in 10 days. In June I replied to the message and said: "Where is it?" To which Garmin replied:
"I apologize for the delay in sending you the update disk. We are expecting the next version of City Navigator to start shipping soon. The version 7 on order was released on June 1st of 2005, and the updates are generally released annually, so we will see the next update shortly. I don't expect any update disks to be shipped out for few weeks, possibly longer. This will be a new version, however, since we have stopped shipping the older version 7. As soon as they come in, we will first ship to those orders previously placed. Again, I apologize for the delay"
I sez: "I'm going on vacation 7/1. Can I at least have the v7 disk, knowing it is a year old, but at least it is not TWO years old?"
Garmin sez: "I will be happy to help you. I have ordered a full version copy of City Navigator North America v7 DVD to be sent to you which is in stock. You will need a DVD-ROM drive to install this software. The update is on DVD as well and there will be a $75.00 charge to unlock the maps which is the update fee. I have send the DVD UPS Next Day"
I got the v7 disk in the mail 2 days later.http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif[Edit - Disk rec'd on/about 6/21/2006.]

FYI: This is the email I recieved from Garmin (sales@garmin.com) about when V8 upgrade will be released.
=======================================================
Thank you for your inquiry.
The version 8 update from previous versions should be out around the first of August. As with our last updates, I am sure the release date will be pushed back to allow someone who just purchased a previous version with the free update. The update to the version 8 has not yet been posted on our site http://www.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp (http://www.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp) When this is done, there will be a release date shown. If you were to purchase or register a previous version since this release date, the update would be free. For example, if the release date that is posted is June 1, any registered version after this date would be eligible for a free update. Even though, if you were to have registered in May or even late April, we can and will make exceptions.
Thank you and best Regards,

Thanks Mark,
I just got the reply from Garmin on my email and it said basically the same thing. My V7 hasn't even arrived yet. Just to be safe, I am going to hold off on unlocking it until the release date is posted. Another 4 weeks won't hurt.

<...hold off on unlocking it...>
Exactly what I am doing, although I am betting on July 1st. If not, I'll have to unlock anyway, as vacation starts July 16th.

Buck;
Below is another reply I received this morning from Garmin about the Upgrade DVD. I would recommend calling Garmin and letting them know your status. I had a similar problem with V6 and the person updated my record, and I was able to unlock after the update came out by about 2 months later.
Garmin's Reply:
The update City Navigator v8 DVD will not be available to order until the
middle of July. You will have to wait a few more weeks to order this update
map.

Now this is strange... My Version 8 of City Navigator North America arrived today and I have it installed and unlocked. I did have a bit of a problem unlocking it to my second GPS but cured that with a phone call ( 1 hour duration ) to Garmin.
The tech told me that I was probably the first to get a copy of it.

Mark,
I bought a 2003 LTE that had everything with it except the Garmin unlock code, so I was using City Select 6 from my Ique 3600 on the Navigator. I bought the full version from Proadvantage.com for $105 and now use it in both units.

Checked Garmins website and the version 8 ($75.00 Version) update software is now available for ordering! I'm still on version 5, so am anxious to update. Hope it works with the BMW Navigator I, (Streetpilot III) Ok.

Can you believe that "City Navigator North America NT v8" isn't available until 31 August? Even that will probably be delayed. Luckily the availability date is still some time in April 2006, so I qualify for the free update.

Got the Update Disk in the mail today - about 6 weeks ago I called Garmin and got on a list to have it forwarded to me when available.
Took some doing and patience on my part but in the end I:
1. Installed v8 of City Navigator maps on the software MapSource 6.10.2 on my computer . . .
2. Paid for the update (all of US, Alaska, PR and I think Hawaii) - $75 over the internet
3. Received and activiated the unlock code in the software - it runs as another map on the software. Now you can toggle back and forth between your outdated and updated maps - what's up with that!! I was upgrading from v4.01 so now I will not get lost . . . or should I say mis-directed!!
Process took longer than it should have but at least I did not have to call the boys & girls at Garmin . . .
