Background: 06 GS Adventure with risers/bar backs and the waterproof TT tank bag.
Climbed on the GS this morning for the daily commute, turned the key, hit the start button and the RPMs went to over 6000!
Flipped the kill switch and she shut down.
Scratched the head, checked the Throttle Lock to be sure it was not interfering with the throttle, no joy.
Started it again and again the RPMs head to the high side, killed it again!
WTF Over?
After close examination I find the throttle cable has engaged a plastic hook on on the Right side of the TT tank bag on the elastic webbing material.
With the handle bars straight the throttle cable was pulled out of the bottom of the throttle housing causing the engine revs.
I unphucked the throttle cable and stowed the hook and she fired right up.
Add another check to the pre-flight if using Bar Backs and TT waterproof tank bag.

Dag! You're a lucky man that you found that when you did. Talk about a potential for disaster.

Reminds me a brain fart i had when I wuz in my 20's (hmm, most of 20's was in that state).
My buddy had taken his Yamaha 250 enduro apart , then could not get it to start. After many attempts to kick start the beast I had the "bright" idea to run it down the hill by my dad's house. It started right up!. Wide open!. My bud had put the throttle slide in 180 out from the right way. the pin that fits into the groove on the slide was holding the slide all the way up. fun ride.
Did i mention the there is a river behind my dad's house? :)

1974, on my 74 Yamaha 360 Enduro, punched out to 408 and guess how I reassembled the carb/linkage? And push started with much help from two witnesses (I mean buddys) with compression release engaged but ineffective in 3rd gear she lit off and I did a high speed unicycle imitation across Shelby's Truck Stop/Gas station/Beer joint/Ho House/Tattoo Parlor/Poker Game in Pelham Alabama and into US31 just ahead of Pelham PD Night Patrol who as it turns out was not amused by humorous attempts to placate his concerns over my "blatant disregard for Local, State and Federal laws" and was unimpressed by the fact I road an accelerating wheelie in 3rd gear from 6 to what he inscribed as "122MPH before touching the front wheel down in the inside lane of South Bound US31 at 21:45 hours" while standing on the pegs with no helmet or gloves or jacket, just jeans, teeshirt & sneakers (planing on cranking the bike and adjusting the carb, remember?) and working the thumb screw on the compression release handle as tight as it would go so I could stall the engine because apparently I failed to plug in the right grip control harness when I installed the new bars an hour before resulting in the KILL SWITCH NO WORKIE and the key switch was not reachable in it's relocated position so it was clutch and blow the engine or compression release which worked very controllably once adjusted and when I got it to a safe speed I went into the median and locked up the rear wheel to kill it.
Remember the witnesses? I mean Buds?
Paul was the only son of the Pelham Chief Of Police and when his attempts to explain the cause of the malfunction to Officer "I aint buying it!" failed he walked to a pay phone and called his old man who had the dispatcher radio the patrolman to "Let me go" and He would handle it which meant I washed all the cop cars the next weekend.
Dayem I gotta quit drinking Mt. Dew after 10pm.
Thanks for triggering a waterfall of memories that I had lost in the cobwebs!
Sorry for the "stream of consciousness format", sux don't it?

Dave, I was fortunate enough to have a working compression release. I still had to lay it down and managed to stop about 10 feet shy of going for a swim!
I was unable to reach the velocity which you attained, maybe next time :D
Fun times, how did we ever survive?

How indeed :)
Thanks again, I have been recalling other not so dramatic events and have been grinning and shaking my head a lot all morning.
Sue asked me what I was grinning about.http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif
