Before you read this post please understand that I am an idiot! As a result of my stupidity, I think I fried my radio.

For the last three months, I've been singing the praises of the Hoon Mount for Sat. radios. I've had mine rigged up temporarily since April. I had the wires run beneath my tank bag and under the seat to the rear power outlet. It has worked fine until about two weeks ago.

Every time I'd hit a bump, the radio would lose power and turn off only to turn back on a second or two later. I thought I had traced the fault to the power adapter. I decided to add some more solder to it. No problem! However, it still didn't fix the problem. The radio would still cut out. I thought I knew the problem was in the plug. My new brilliant idea was that the connection inside the power adapter and the 6inch BMW adaptor plug I was using was bad. So I thought it was smart to wrap the cigarette adaptor in tin foil and plug into the BMW adaptor.

This was a stupid move! ZAP- blew the fuse.

No problem- pop in a new fuse and I'm good to go right? Nope! I now have no sound coming out of the left side. I'm hoping for a loose connection in the rear of the unit but I think I screwed up the radio unit itself.

Has anyone had one repaired? Does anyone have a spare radio with tape or CD laying around? I would hate to take the bike apart and not have a backup radio to install.

Before I get abused, realize I started this post with I’M AN IDIOT! Turns out, the fault is in the radio unit itself.

I seriously doubt that you fried your radio by shorting the accessory outlet.

Probably a pinched cable or something like that. Plug in some headphones and see if you have signal on both sides....I'm assuming that you're talking about the left side of the sat radio and It's hard wired in to the aux jack. Right???

Good Luck

If it's abuse you want I'm sure someone here will accommodate you.

I don't believe the fault is in the radio unit itself
more likely the nut at the end of the handlebars.

But don't be so hard on yourself, education has always been expensive

Rob;
While I can not help you fix your problem; Let the first 'perfect' person throw abuse your way... ;)

I'm sure many (including myself) have done worse things. As Hans says, its expierence (that you only do once). :)

Rob,
Not sure what your problem is now but I had a similar prob using the roady and the cigar lighter adapter unit. My problem turned out that the adapted moved around inside the cigar apapter and lost contact and turned off the roady and back on. My solution was to open the adapter and solder directly to the center pin and the ground side and then make permantent connections to the bikes 12V system.
I am not familiar with the BMW intercom system so if you can use the headset as someone suggested to check both channels of the radio go there and work backwards. Do both channels work on the front speakers? another check of the radio.

That's exactly the problem I having with my Replay. I'll take a look at it.

As for the speakers, I don't have the Comm system but I did try to adjust the stereo to play in the front and on each side. I only have sound coming out of the right side.

Thanks for the kind words! Write this up as an expensive lesson learned- I need to take a motorcycle electonics course!
