TIVO - The best thing ever. Period... TIVO is right up there with "cut and paste" and my power center stand (lazy I know).... :)

This now concerns me. I'm aware of what Tivo is, but I've never owned or operated one. And I don't have a GPS. Man, technology is leaving me in the dust...

I am proud to say that my son works for TIVO in San Jose as one of the R&D engineers :)

He is not allowed to disclose future projects, but does hint at BIG things in the very near future ;)

Interesting your son works there. You might want to pass on that I hope they (TIVO) provide (fix) some very basic features. For those with multiple TIVOs, we suffer from a lack of common sense features. Of course this is my 1.5 cents. :)

Myself, I used the TIVO APIs and wrote my own code, so I know it can not be that hard.

Overall, TIVO is still better than VHS and Windows Media Center (at least until the next version is released next summer). More stuff to spend money I dont have on. :)

But you don't have one? And you don't have a GPS?? :eek: Do you have an iPod??? :DNo iPod. Am I allowed to say that I don't see the need for one? I know a lot of guys and gals ride with "their tunes" but I prefer talk radio, so XM is in my future.

I've had a career in information systems, so hardware/software are no strangers to me. I've "inflicted" more change on people (through new systems, networks, PCs, applications, reports, etc....) than you can imagine, and I'm as big a gadget freak as the next guy, yet I find myself not caring about the latest/greatest iPod/MP3/audio stuff. I've put a ton of $$ into my LT in the last few months, and if I had the dough I'd get a GPS tomorrow. It just hasn't reached the top of the stack yet, priority-wise.

I understand brand marketing, but it has gotten way too invasive. Then again, maybe recording the few shows I'm interested in digitally, watching them at my convenience, and skipping through the ads altogether is why the advertisers feel the need to embed their ads directly into the shows. When they speak of "value perspective" they're certainly not talking about my value, but purely their own.

As this thread continues to evolve off-topic: the ultimate extension of this concept is advertising as seen in The Minority Report. As you walk through the mall scanners pick up your unique physical characteristic (eye/retina scan-type thing) and bark out ads directed specifically to you, by name. "They" know your purchasing habits and know what you probably want to buy next.That device would explode as I walked by the BMW dealer. :D

There are several watershed technologies in human history that, shortly after their introduction and acceptance, make us wonder how we ever managed to live without them. The microwave. The VCR. Personal computers. Cellular phones. The Internet.

TiVo (specifically, Digital Video Recorders) are doubtless one of these life-altering technologies.

Go to http://www.tivo.com , or visit a TiVo retailer (or a good friend that has one). You'll see what I mean.

Several cable systems are now offering their own DVR systems, integrated with their service, that offer more features than a stand-alone TiVo can.

Go try one out, and be amazed.

I'm of the impression that TiVo is more the intelligent or programmable guide portion of television viewing. Whereas, a DVR is simply a digital VCR, if you will. I have DISH network, and 3 DVRs. And all without TiVo. Some of my friends have TiVo along with their DirecTV DVRs. I have capabilities that they do not have, and vice versa.

Which brings me full circle to the statement "TIVO - The best thing ever. Period... " Quite frankly, I'm not that impressed. :)
