For no apparent reason, the tabs, distance /time to next turn, speed etc... disappear. All I have to do is touch the page button and they come right back. It has happened three times on different rides. They vanish and I bring them back three or four times, then no problem the rest of the ride. Any ideas?

Sounds like it's high-time to grease the ball-bearings.

If you touch the screen to zoom in or out the numbers that are part of the tabs will go away. However, you will see a green tab along the right hand edge of the screen. If you touch that tab the numbers will come back.

I think he's implying that the tabs disappear without him touching the screen.
I still say it the ball bearings... :D
No but seriously, I'm wondering if it isn't static electricity. Try rubbing the screen with a dryer sheet.

could be static.. could be heat/vibration/marginal touch screen pressure on edges.. Make sure if you store it not to have anything pressing on the touch screen...

I had a similar issue with my 2610 in April. Cold weather and the screen would jump to the "touched" mode. Just like I had touched it. I would press "page" and it would go back to normal, then return to the touched mode. Could not get it to stay in the normal mode. Drove me nuts. It only seems to do it in cold weather so I may return it before the warranty runs out for check out. No issues in hot weather.

Take some black electrical tape and put over the inferred sensor for remote control on the left side. I was having all kinds of weird things happening until I covered it.

Disable the remote, I've not had the problem but heard on another DB that it can cure some forms of misbehavior.
May be some info here that can help:

How bout recalibrating the touch screen??
I just discovered how to do that this weekend...
*Also there are diagnostics onboard the GPS that you can do yourself with pushing, I think the Menu and Find buttons simulataniously when turning on the Garmin. It runs a bunch of self tests with a pass/fail monitoring.
Good luck!

Totally agree - we had some sun in the UK at the end of last year - my Navigator II (aka 2610) went baresk - bit of black sticky tape over the IR port cured it (but grease the bearings too, just in case:p )

Thanks guys - Come to think of it, the sun was at my back , and fairly bright each time it happened. I now have a visor (Ain't Father's Day great for farkles - even inexpensive ones) and will try the tape idea.
Again THANKS BUNCHES

I can confirm that pressing the Find and Menu buttons whilst turning on the 2610 does start up a self diagnostic screen. Wow, the things I learn from this board. Oh, and it passed all parameters! Might see if the tape over the IR port helps too.
