We had a great time today! 12 people on 11 bikes were there and we got a lot done. Joe Paulsey and Mike (1 of 4 Mikes here today) helped me create this work list, from memory:

Jim Sciullo: BMW floorboards, canisterectomy
Glen Hinegardner: new rear brake pads
Rock Trant: 2 new shocks, raised/adjusted handlebars
Howard Schisler: HID, new rear brake pads, BMW floorboards (and an infamous one-hour Helmet Guardian install, but we won't talk about that...)

We had some non-BMWs there. Joe brought Nancy, his riding partner, on her Kawasaki. My friend Steve on his new Gold Wing stopped by for awhile.

Rock took a bunch of pictures that he will share on disc and we can post. He also has several hours of blackmail video, as his camera was running all day.

Lisa made a great lunch and it was enjoyed by all. Those who stayed later had leftovers for dinner before they left.

Thanks go to Jim Sciullo for the loan of his m/c lift, to BMW Motorcycles of Columbus for the door prizes, and to all those who helped with the various projects, especially Joe and Mike for staying late and for doing the lion's share of the work. Some of the photos I took are attached. If someone can recommend a free photo-sharing site I'll post them all.

Hey, Howard - VERY nice place ya got there. I'm jealous ---- a lot!!

Sounds like a great group and y'all gotta lot done. BTW, who wuz in charge of counting the left over screws?!?!

Howard, I use Kodak Easy Share program (they used to be Ofoto) and they store your pics for ya, or you can keep 'em on your PC. Ones they store are in album formats so's you can share 'em with folks.

There are several free pic programs available. I'd think Rock might know of a couple.

Helmet Guardian - we gonna hear the straight skinny on that leetle exercise?? :bmw:

Howard, I'm w/ Dick - VERY nice place! Glad y'all had fun and kudos to your dealer for stepping up to the plate w/ some door prizes. BTW, do your gutters drain under the cement? I was looking at the pics and trying to figure out where the heck the water went .

I also want to hear about the Helmet Guardian install!

I left for Columbus at 6:20am . . . got back home 18 hours later! :D I TON of fun...good times! A lot of wrenching, and jousting, and eating, and drinking, and sweating, and more drinking (ALL non-alchoholic of course). Lisa made us SWEET TEA!!! Woohoo!!! I think it mighta been too hot for beer anyway! :D

Can't wait until the next one Howard. But for now....I gotta get to BED!!! You boys wore me OUT! :)

I was looking at the pics and trying to figure out where the heck the water went .Two years ago we had some major renovations done to the building you see in the first photo. We hired a builder to put new steel on the roof and walls, and new doors and windows, and added 2 overheard doors, the porch, concrete apron, water, telephone, cable, and broadband internet (hey, we had a trench going to the house anyway -- might as well put everything possible into it...). When you open all 4 overheard doors it's almost like a shelter house.

The builder is very thorough, and suggested tiling the gutters/downspouts away from the building, as opposed to letting them just splash onto the ground. Since he had his mini-trackhoe there for other trenching work he used that to tie the 2 downspouts together behind the building, where they are tiled into my neighbor's pond. We both win: I have no rain water on the ground to deal with and the neighbor gets his pond replenished. The concrete was then poured. It's a nice, finished technique.

Sounds like a great group and y'all gotta lot done. BTW, who wuz in charge of counting the left over screws?!?!

Helmet Guardian - we gonna hear the straight skinny on that leetle exercise??All technical tasks were snoopervised by Joe. Rock's LT -- with its shock replacements -- definitely got torn into the most. Tupperware from the tipover wings and above, the stingray, and rear wheel were all taken off. At one point we had 6 guys taking things off his bike and it looked like a NASCAR pit stop. So... the plastic is all off, fasteners are all over the floor (looking like a hardware store grab-bag sale), and all the amateurs sit down, with a collective "OK, so what now?". Then Joe and Mike #4 (from Cleveland) finish the shock removals and re-installations while we all nod approvingly and add "encouraging remarks" from 2 rows of chairs in "the gallery".

I'll 'fess up before Rock and Joe have a chance to: My wife got me a Helmet Guardian and I thought I'd actually do a little (very little) wrenching and install the thing. I sat down at the back of the bike with the (very) few parts that come with it. Joe helped me with drilling larger holes into the plastic spacers behind the license plate to accommodate the Helmet Guardian's larger bolts. I had everything together (#1), then realized I didn't center the HG on the rear mud flap (or whatever the plastic piece is called). Take it all back apart. Center it and reassemble it (#2). So why are there 2 washers left over? Oh yeah, you need washers behind the bolt heads, not just the nuts. Take it all back apart. Add washers and reassemble it (#3). Rock -- who has a real knack for this, and you gotta see it in person -- says (paraphrasing): "Looks good Howard. You gonna put the license plate on that thing?" Crap -- license plate is on the floor. Take it all apart. Add license plate and reassemble it (#4). Looks nice... an hour and a half later.

So, later on I asked Joe why the whole rear assembly was loose at the bottom. When reinstalling the rear assembly I hadn't engaged the hinges in the slots at the bottom. Take 2 screws off at the top, engage Tab A in Slot B, screw it back together. Perfect, and it only took 5 tries. Rock advised me that if anybody asked if I had installed the HG I could say "Yeah, I've done 4 or 5 of those."

Once done, it's really a nice product and very secure. Sure, it's not going to stop the determined helmet thief but that's not the point. It provides a convenient and reasonably secure way to store 2 helmets.

First I had a great time, thanks to all involved.
Now lets get to the important part, the bun burner baked beans. I rode about 420 miles for this event, I could double that in the rain for these baked beans. All the guys sitting at my table said (when I went back for more) DON"T TAKE THEM ALL, LEAVE ME SOME. Lisa the food was great, they could add that on the Iron Butt tour. :) (BTW Lisa a bun burner is 1000 miles in 1 day, if you already knew, after yesterday, you know it's not the first dumb thing I ever said)
It was also very good to meet and put faces to the people that you interact with on this site. Surprisingly everyone that was there was much like they are on the list, which was refreshing itself. Many times you get these people that are 10' tall and bullet proof from behind a keyboard (you know who you are)Except Joe and Rock who are quiet well mannered and reserved. Sorry must have fell asleep and been dreaming!
We got a ton of stuff done , mostly with all the shortcuts involved, yes we did the front shock without taking the tank out, Joe, Mike (Medina OH) and Kim were all good wrenches. We even got Howard working some Tupperware on my bike.
It did look like a NASCAR pit, I think Joe had told them ,"here is a chance to learn without scratching your bike, if you scratch Rock's who can tell." Then he dubbed it the K1200LTA.
The trip home was like a new bike, no buck, hem and yawl from hitting the bridges on I-70 at 95, wait whats the speed limit in that state 64.9mph. :D
Moving the handle bars that one inch changed the arm position very little, but it took out the reach in the turns and replaced it with the think turn (where you and the machine become one) Some of you "Joe" know exactly what I mean, the rest keep riding and you will.
The one thing that I missed on the way home was my bead seat, I had thought this thing okay, maybe a non-item. I gave Mike from Pgh mine to try out on the way home, it was still high 80's when we left, I could feel the hot spots on the underside of my thighs, that were not there when I used the bead rider, so it does work.
Here is Joe working so hard his shoe fell off, and another of Howard learning the Torx screw blues. :bmw:
Rock
Takes the time to teather his tupperware WOW
Thats Medina Mike in the white T-Shirt, and Mike from PGH in the Green
pic 2 is Howard and Cheesecake Mike (never should have worn that shirt)

OT: now, whassup? DIDJA GET THE GT TODAY? What do you think after riding your very own??Yep...she's mine. http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/wings.gif And, I think I need to go for my first midnight ride in a few minutes. I rode it HARD for about 50 miles, changed the oil, then took my girl out for a cool summer ride. Stopped at my brother's house (a fellow LT'er), then headed to Chagrin Falls. A quaint little town with a Starbucks and an ice cream shop, more yuppies than one should have to endure, all riding Harleys or European cages.

Funniest thing happened though . . . we pulled up to a line of Harleys on the street, I proceeded to back into an available spot. I take off my helmet and hear from the sidewalk, "There's the new GT. Are you...JOE?" My wife and I just laughed. I didn't know the couple, but they had heard through the grapevine that Joe, aka 'messenger13', was picking up his new GT today. They saw the temp tag and put 2 & 2 together. Good times! :)

See the attachment. My wife took one of the group photos and mounted it behind our local dealer's license plate bracket (you may recall these were left over from the door prize give-away). If you'd like one of these let me know. There is a small cost involved -- estimated at $7. This covers the cost of a 6x8 picture frame (which we need to provide the easel-type stand-up thing on the back), plexiglass for the front, the license plate bracket and shipping. Makes a nice memento of last week's Tech Session.

Everything fits inside the license plate bracket. The color you see outside the bracket is from the scanner bed.

I'm giving this one to our dealer as a token of appreciation.

That is really cool!

Was that your idea or Lisa's? How many tries to get that done, less or more than the helmet lock install? Just joking of course.

But seriously, I'd like to "re-group" my tools and get things set up in the garage you all worked in, where I could do some light maintenance on cars, mowers and the LT. Maybe when #1 son is out on his own I can reclaim the space and the tools, get rid of the sawdust...
