Visiting DC

Our daughter is doing an internship with the EEOC in DC this summer. Planning on rolling in to DC this Friday 6/16 for a weekend visit then head down to Williamsburg for the tourist routine on Tuesday 6/20. Any recommendations for a fun route from DC to Williamsburg?

Depending on where you are starting from in the DC area, here's a couple of routes for you. I'll assume you know how to get to and use the Capital beltway - I495.

1. Either Rt. 5 to 301 S or Rt. 210 to 301 S. Cross over the bridge into King George County and then hand a left onto Rt. 17 S. Turn right on Rt. 33 and then take I-64 E to Williamsburg.

2. Take Rt. 50 E towards Annapolis and over the Bay Bridge and on towards Salisbury. Split onto Rt. 13 S. Come over the bay again in towards Virginia Beach and then take 64 W towards Williamsburg.

But these routes are mostly 2 lane except when on Rt. 50 and I-64. In fact Rt. 50 after the bay bridge is also 2 lane. Over all Rt. 50 is also a good quality road and depending on what time of the day / week you are on, it might be a nice or worse experience !!

Prakash gives a long but very scenic route. You go east from Washington on US 50 through Annapolis. You can see some of the Naval Academy from the road. Then cross the Chesapeake Bridge (US 50) and then head south on Maryland's eastern shore on US 13 down into Virginia's eastern shore. Then you go on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel which brings you back to Virginia's mainland. To can see the Norfolk naval base and the huge ships from the highway. Stay on US 13 into Norfiolk and look for the sigs for I-64 west which will take you to Williamsburg. A strong note...avoid rush hour traffic in the Washington area at all costs. The rush hour is 5 to 10 AM and 3 to 8 PM. No exageration. Also, I-95 going out of Washington has delays due to construction of new bridges across the Potomac.

Watch out for the Taxi's they have a tendency to cross over lanes without looking. The average speed on the beltway is about 70 -90 when it is running (which is not often)but be-careful of the guy who owns the left lane and is doing 45. Rush hour is from 5:30am - 9:30*10 and 2:30 - 7:30*8 M-F, Weekends you just never know.

DC is a beautiful city with lots to do and see but in town I suggest taking the Metro.

Take care and have a safe ride, if you can make it go to see "the Awakening" at Hains Point, just something different.
